Damariscotta’s Historic Town Clock

After nearly 135 years of manual winding by volunteers, the town clock and 900-pound bell inside the steeple of the Damariscotta Baptist Church in Damariscotta, Maine have new automatic controls.

A set of three programmable atomic clocks and small motors inside the clock tower will control new hands on the clock faces, as well as the ringing of the bell.

Church Specialties, of East Poultney, Vt., installed the Chime Master bell controllers, clocks, and associated equipment last week for about $15,900, finishing the work Wednesday, Aug. 14.
